Family-Nurturing Communication Topic - Economic Slump Affecting Teens

A recent business article reported that the slumping economy's affect on teens and their parents is causing teens to be thrifty.
Wanted to have Family Talking Sessions with your teens but couldn't think of a launching topic that would hold their interest? If so, a discussion topic has fallen in your lap. What better topic than current downturn in the business climate.
The article gave stats that would interest your kids and lead to further conversation; it reports a year ago teens were able to splurge on brand name jeans, handbags, and boots. The job market for teens as all but diminished due to the unemployment rate and other changes in the economy. Where do they shop now? At thrift stores.
Your teens are probably experiencing loss of finances and are"like stressed out" with anxiety and fear. "How long is this thing going to last? Maybe they have never thought about the lack of money and lack of jobs.
Here are a few tips on how to start:
Dad and Mom work your schedules so that on the next non-school evening you are free. Talk with each other first. If you are not in some kind of harmony on the topic or at least come to an agreement on what you'll say, it'll be of no value if the two of you go off in some type of verbal battle.
After finishing your preliminary talk , set up a comfortable environment that encourages a flow of conversation and you get together for the dialog,
You could throw out something such as, " What are you thoughts about how the current economic crisis is affecting you and your friends?" Is there such a thing as "Trickle-Down-Economics" is another topic that would get their mind gear.
What are some changes your family could make to become more thrifty?
